Scripture Text: "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience."- Ephesians 2:1-2 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL

It was Stephen Covey, who said,  “We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.”

His words highlights an essential truth: our spiritual state is central to who we are and how we live.

Yet, in today’s world, many are spiritually dead, separated from God by sin and consumed by the ways of the world.  The Bible makes it clear that apart from Christ, humanity is spiritually dead.

The scripture text (Ephesians 2:1-2) describes how we once walked in disobedience, following the course of this world and its ruler, Satan

To be spiritually dead is to be alienated from God, and unable to discern His will or respond to His love.

It is a state of existence where materialism, selfish ambition, and sinful desires take precedence over spiritual truths.  Romans 8:6 reminds us, "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

In this modern age, such spiritual deadness is evident. Where people chase wealth, power, and pleasure, yet in the end remain unfulfilled

Where the world normalizes sin, calling evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20).

Where Social media, entertainment, and other distractions pull many further away from God, leaving their souls empty and their lives devoid of eternal purpose.

However, the good news is that God has made a way to bring life to the spiritually dead. Through Jesus Christ, we are offered salvation and the promise of new life.

Ephesians 2:4- declares, "But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)."

Therefore, spiritual life begins when you acknowledge your need for a Savior and turn to Jesus in faith. He fills the emptiness of your heart gives you purpose, and restores your relationship with God.

As 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

This is why believers must also guard against slipping into spiritual complacency, which can lead to a state of lifelessness even after salvation.

A daily communion with God through prayer, study of His Word, and obedience keeps your spirit alive and thriving.

Romans 12:2 exhorts us to, "be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

POINTS OF REFLECTION

1. Are there areas in your life where you feel spiritually dead or distant from God?

2. How can you prioritize your relationship with God to ensure your spirit remains alive and thriving?

3. Are you conforming to the ways of the world or allowing the Holy Spirit to transform you?

PRAYER POINTS

Father, IJN: Revive my spirit and help me to walk daily in obedience to Your Word.
