Submit To God!

Scripture: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." — James 4:7 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL 

Beloved, there is a battle plan hidden in one short verse, and most believers only fight half of it. We love the second half — "resist the devil, and he will flee from you", but we skip the first half, which is the very thing that makes the resistance work. Submission comes before resistance. You cannot successfully fight what you have never first surrendered to God.

Now let's picture a branch that has been cut from a vine, lying on the ground trying to produce fruit on its own strength. It strains, it wilts, it withers — because fruit was never meant to come from independence. It comes from abiding. 

That is exactly the picture Jesus gives in another place, and the principle behind it is submission: staying connected, staying yielded, letting the life of the Vine flow through the branch rather than the branch trying to generate its own life. "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." — 1 Peter 5:6-7 (KJV) is not a passive resignation, it is a soldier laying down a weapon he was never strong enough to carry in the first place.

Submission isn't weakness; it's the only way to access a strength greater than your own.

So, that is the paradox the world will never understand: submission looks like surrender, but in God's kingdom, it is the doorway to authority. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." — Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV).

Notice the order again. Trust and acknowledgment come first; direction follows. God does not fight your battles around your submission. He fights them because of it.

I once counseled a young man who was exhausted from trying to fix a situation entirely by his own effort — sending message after message, planning strategy after strategy, wearing himself out. The moment he stopped striving and simply said, "God, this is Yours now," peace came before the circumstance even changed. That is Romans 12:1 in real life: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." A living sacrifice does not climb back off the altar. Victory begins the moment you stop wrestling God for control and start resting in His hands.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. What situation am I still trying to control instead of fully submitting to God?

2. Do I resist the devil first and submit to God second — or am I doing it in the biblical order?

3. What would change in my life this week if I truly rested in God's care rather than striving in my own strength?

PRAYER KEY POINTS

Father, IJN: I submit every area of my life to You today; teach me to trust and not strain. (James 4:7)

Father, IJN: I cast every care and burden I've been carrying onto You, for You care for me. (1 Peter 5:7)

Father, IJN: Direct my path as I acknowledge You in all my ways, not leaning on my own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
